Octane Fitness exercise equipment employs Nordic Bluetooth Smart technology to deliver analytics and training programs to iOS compatible devices

Oslo, Norway 2015/05/28 - Ultra low power (ULP) RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OSE: NOD) today announces that U.S.-based fitness equipment manufacturer, Octane Fitness, is using Nordic’s nRF51422 multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide both ANT and Bluetooth® Smart (previously known as Bluetooth low energy) connectivity to a range of elliptical cross-trainers and zero-impact running machines.
Octane Fitness is the only fitness equipment manufacturer in the world dedicated exclusively to zero-impact cardiovascular exercise. The company’s Q Series elliptical cross-trainers, xRide recumbent ellipticals, and new zero-impact running machine, Zero Runner®, target everyone from casual exercisers to elite level athletes who are looking for an impact and injury-free workout, as well as the ability to monitor and track performance through their smartphone or tablet.
The Q Series and xRide elliptical machines, and the Zero Runner, are supported by Octane Fitness’ SmartLink™ app that allows users to wirelessly connect and control the exercise machine from iOS-compatible Bluetooth Smart Ready devices. In addition to monitoring time, distance, calories burned, speed, and heart rate, the app also provides customized 30, 60 or 90-day training programs, as well as CROSS CiRCUIT®. CROSS CiRCUIT allows users to perform an interval workout, with cardio intervals on the machine, and strength training adjacent to it, via custom exercises from the SmartLink app on their Bluetooth Smart Ready device.
The elliptical machines and Zero Runner can be paired with Bluetooth Smart Ready heart rate monitors via the SmartLink app. Nordic’s nRF51422 can also support ANT+ for connection to heart rate chest straps that use the technology, and in the case of the Zero Runner, Garmin watches that offer Connect IQ, Garmin’s open platform for third party app developers.
The nRF51422 is a powerful, highly flexible multiprotocol SoC ideally suited for ANT and Bluetooth Smart ultra low power wireless applications. The nRF51422 is integrates a 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ M0 microcontroller with 256kB/128kB Flash + 32kB/16kB RAM.
“The ability to wirelessly connect to and control the machine through the SmartLink app allows home users to keep their investment in the product down, as they get all the features of a fully integrated touch screen from their smartphone or tablet, without the cost of engineering this functionality into the fitness equipment,” says Tim Porth, Executive Vice President of Product Development and Marketing at Octane Fitness.
“Bluetooth Smart and ANT+ both offer good range and interference immunity,” adds Porth. “These features really help in the CROSS CiRCUIT environment if, for example, the user is wearing a heart rate monitor. While performing CROSS CiRCUIT, the user isn’t always on the machine – he or she could be in another room doing the strength training element of their training session. The Bluetooth Smart or ANT+ wireless technology allows them to stay connected to the console at all times.
