The IoT Engine: What is it?
The IoT (Internet of Things) is a wide-ranging concept that is driving a new economic order. IoT solutions are having a profound impact on the way business is conducted: early adopters are seeing an improvement in their competitive position and a significant boost in profitability. The tangible contributory benefits include operational efficiency, enhanced customer relations, insightful information based on real-time data, and the ability to create new business models.
The Telit IoT Engine drives this process enabling access to a wider set of edge devices. It expands the company’s visibility into the value and supply chains, shows how customers are using their products in detail and timeliness never before possible. In turn, this allows offers to be fine-tuned and operations with suppliers and other partners to be optimized.
For example, real-time monitoring of industrial processes is an established m2m solution that allows remedial action to be taken before anything breaks down. An IoT solution goes further: it allows companies to become connected manufacturers. From the supplier, to the plant, to the distributor, to the products, everything in and around the manufacturing operation can be connected. This allows organizations to go deeper in the demand chain, to not only monitor the plant and its industrial/manufacturing assets, but also goods created within the plant as they go through the distributor/dealer network to the end customer.
In addition the Telit IoT Engine enables seamless transfer of data from the devices that monitor environmental data and events through to the corporate cloud, where these are processed into the real-time information that management needs in order to make better-informed decisions. In addition, the IoT Engine employs technology that enables this information to be integrated into an enterprise’s information and communication system.
How it works
IoT and m2m solutions broadly encompass three domains: data acquisition, data transmission, and data processing. The Telit IoT Engine combines all three domains into a seamless value chain that facilitates the delivery of robust, thing-connection solution designed to and minimizes time-to-market.
Data acquisition is provided by a comprehensive portfolio of hardware: modules, which are the 24/7 beating heart of the applications. Telit markets cloud-ready modules that enable seamless transfer of data between devices and the cloud. This is one of the many ways that Telit masks m2m communications technology from the application developer.
Data is normally transmitted over a wireless network and the Internet to a central computing facility, typically a public or private cloud, where it is processed into real-time, actionable information. The IoT Engine includes an advanced set of diagnostics and troubleshooting capabilities that reduce service costs while increasing the reliability and efficiency of customers’ solutions.
Modems and wireless services are a means to an end, which is the creation and deployment of applications. This is provided by an application enablement platform cloud service that was designed specifically for the diverse nature of devices and architectures that characterize the IoT. Comprehensive management and configuration capabilities can be used for basic entry-level solutions through to full-scale enterprise-grade deployments.
The Telit IoT Engine leverages a comprehensive portfolio of products, value added wireless services and a cloud centric application enablement platform that allows companies to run their applications in a private or public cloud. It is another industry first from Telit, a go-to-market model entirely focused on business value delivery rather than technology.
