This week focuses on biometric sensors.

A biometric sensor is a transducer that changes a biometric trait of a person into an electrical signal. Biometric traits mainly include biometric fingerprint reader, iris, face or voice. Different technologies can be applied to get this conversation using sophisticated combinations, networks of sensors and digital cameras. Every biometric device requires one type of sensor.

The biometrics applications mainly include high definition cameras for facial recognition or in microphones for voice capture. Some biometrics are designed to scan the vein patterns under the skin. Biometric sensors are an essential feature of identity technology as well as being fundamental to wearables and healthcare monitoring.

Wearables and biometrics have transformed the management of health, both for chronic conditions and daily fitness. Medical professionals and healthcare facilities must make the most efficient use of resources, among which space and time are premium. The use of vital biometrics in remote care applications serves both demands, freeing up care staff time and bed space normally taken up by chronic patients, while still offering critical around the clock observation.

Fitness trackers and wearables are now as commonplace as the cellphone. Now anyone can measure calorie expenditure, heart rate and sleep quality. Wearables will soon be able to monitor diabetes risk, sun exposure and fertility. 

All of this data can be then be sent remotely to healthcare professionals who can monitor a patient’s health and condition all without ever having to visit a doctor’s office.
