From Aeris: "Changing the Face of IoT with 5G Infrastructure"

CES kicked off 2018 with a bang in the world of IoT, and the hot topic of the year was the coming of wireless networks’ fifth generation.
Both AT&T and Verizon have announced their rollout of 5G networks in cities across the country in 2018, and Samsung closed out its CES presentation with details regarding its Telematics Control Unit (TCU), described as “the industry’s first 5G-ready automotive solution.” Intel’s partnership with Korea Telecom at this year’s Winter Olympics will be the first large-scale deployment of IoT powered by 5G wireless systems, and the world will be watching to get a sneak peek at what we can expect as the next leap in wireless technology makes its mark.
According to a report published by Accenture, telecom operators are expected to invest approximately $275 billion in 5G infrastructure in the coming years, which will be a radical step forward in the type of connectivity solutions that will be available to businesses.
A Great Leap Forward
A major question for business owners and decision makers is how they can utilize 5G to improve operational efficiency. As with any step forward in wireless technology, greater bandwidth will provide lower latency communication between resources. But the 100 megabit speeds expected from 5G-enabled devices are more akin to a great leap rather than a simple step. Ericsson head of technology and architecture Erik Ekudden described the low latency capabilities of 5G as a “fiber experience in your pocket” with nearly endless technological possibilities.
One of the most talked about applications of 5G speeds is in the realm of telematics. IoT solutions have allowed automobiles to access critical information about traffic and road conditions that have cultivated safer driving practices across the board. With 5G, companies will be able to equip their service fleet with Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication capabilities. In real time, an automobile will be able to connect to traffic management systems and other cars on the road to determine the safest and most efficient way to navigate a given route, right down to the distance between the vehicle and any obstacles that lie ahead. As part of an integrated traffic system, a fleet vehicle can help the driver anticipate the road in front of them and even decelerate to avoid collisions using on board M2M communication.
Perhaps the field where 5G will make its biggest impact is healthcare. A report from Darrell M. West at the Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings details the impact of 5G-enabled IoT devices in the medical field. “These devices will provide never before seen telemedicine diagnosis and treatment services as well as high resolution video conferencing,” West said, “all the while delivering quality care at affordable prices.” Everything from vital signs and physical activity to medication adherence can be tracked in real time using remote sensors, clinical wearables, and a myriad of other 5G-enabled devices. Some critical medical functions, such as implanted defibrillators that monitor patients at risk of suffering serious heart attacks, require high reliability and latency intervals that are down to a few milliseconds. 5G makes these goals attainable.
