Compact USB Dongle for Wireless Peripherals Production ready reference design The nRF24LU1-DONGLE is a production ready reference design for a ultra compact USB dongle for wireless peripherals using the Nordic Semiconductor nRF24LU1 single chip 2.4GHz transceiver with full-speed USB, microcontroller and flash memory. The size advantage Measuring only 12×32mm including the connector the reference design integrated everything needed for the full featured USB dongle for wireless peripherals. With the nRF24LU1 single chip solution the dongle features a full-speed USB 2.0 compliant interface, an nRF24L01™ compliant 2 Mbps 2.4GHz transceiver, and enhanced 8051 microcontroller and 16 kbytes of embedded flash. A compact low cost Meander PCB antenna is accompanied by a very compact matching network minimizing the length of the dongle. A single small form factor 16 MHz crystal provides all necessary clocks for the dongle. Necessary passives required for the USB interface is laid out in a compact fashion to keep the USB dongle as short a possible. There is no external EEPROM or voltage regulator on the design as the nRF24LU1 fl ash is used to emulate non volatile memory and all necessary voltage regulators are integrated on the nRF24LU1 chip. One Dongle, Multiple Products The advantage of flash memory As the nRF24LU1 includes 16 kbytes of on chip fl ash, it enables a single USB dongle design to be used for a range of different products simply by programming the different firmware at the final assembly stage. This presents significant advantages in terms of inventory management and flexibility. Future Proof Performance Multiple wireless devices, low latency and high throughput With a full-speed (max 12 Mbps ) USB 2.0 compatible interface, the 2 Mbps 2.4GHz transceiver and the enhanced powerful 8051 microcontroller the reference design provides a true future proof solution in terms on performance. The dongle can handle multiple wireless devices with bidirectional data links, while ensuring low latency in combination with high data throughput. The combination of multiple USB endpoints and the MultiCeiver™ technology the 2.4GHz transceiver offers native support for multiple wireless devices connected to the dongle without the need for custom USB driver on the PC side.
