The Fujitsu MB8RS2MT is a 256K x 8 bit FRAM (Ferroelectric Random Access Memory) IC which uses the ferroelectric and silicon gate CMOS processes to form the nonvolatile memory cells.  This process allows the MB85RS2MT to retain data without using a backup battery.  This contributes to lower power requirements and less board space for the end user.

The ferroelectric process also provides for 1013 read/write cycles and data retention of 10yrs, which is a significant increase over Flash and EEPROM.   The MB85RS2MT utilizes the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) for communication.
