nRF51824 is an auto grade AEC-Q100 qualified Bluetooth® low energy SoC. It is a member of the nRF51 Series SoC family and as such is pin and software compatible with other devices in the nRF51 Series. It is an ideal choice for intelligent automotive applications that may include alerts, collision detection, control and telemetry, wireless charging and infotainment, amongst many others.

The nRF51824 SoC is a powerful, highly flexible ultra-low power multiprotocol SoC ideally suited for Bluetooth low energy, ANT and 2.4GHz ultra low-power wireless automotive applications. The nRF51824 SoC is built around a 32-bit ARM® Cortex™-M0 CPU with 256kB + 16kB RAM. The embedded 2.4GHz transceiver supports Bluetooth low energy, ANT and proprietary 2.4 GHz protocol stack. It is on air compatible with the nRF51 Series, nRF24L and nRF24AP Series products from Nordic Semiconductor.

Processing power

The nRF51824 incorporates a 32-bit Cortex-M0 processor enabling demanding automotive sensor applications to be realized in a single chip solution.

Flash memory
nRF51824 is a flash-based wireless SoC. Flash brings the added benefits of flexibility in development and significant appeal of Over The Air Device Firmware Upgrades (OTA DFU) This allows for products using the nRF51824 to upgrade their firmware (application and protocol stack) after production when out in the field.

Multiprotocol radio
The 2.4GHz radio supports multiple protocols including Bluetooth low energy, ANT and 2.4GHz proprietary. The radio has high definition RSSI and highly automated functionality, including EasyDMA for direct memory access during packet send and retrieve.

Power Efficiency
The nRF51824 SoC is an extremely power efficient device that can run from a supply between 1.7V and 3.6V. All individual peripherals and clocks offer complete flexibility of power down when not required for task operation thus minimizing power consumption to a minimum. The IC has a comprehensive system of automated and adaptive power management features. These features range across the entire IC’s operation from power supply switching to peripheral bus/EasyDMA memory management, to automated shut down of all but the absolute essential peripherals required to perform a task.

Software support
Nordic Semiconductor offers an extensive range of freely-available software to support its wireless SoCs. The support offering comes in the form of wireless protocol stacks for Bluetooth low energy, ANT and 2.4GHz proprietary and are known as SoftDevices. SoftDevices are pre-compiled, pre-linked binary files. SoftDevices can be programmed in nRF51 series SoCs and are downloadable from the Nordic website.

The nRF5 SDK is also provided, nRF5 SDKs offer numerous software examples and modules to assist and speed up your development cycle on the nRF51824.
