Wahoo reveals that its KICKR iPhone powered bike trainer employs Nordic Semiconductor Bluetooth low energy and ANT+ wireless technology
Jun 28, 2013
Oslo, Norway 2013/06/28 - Ultra low power (ULP) RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OSE: NOD) today announces that Wahoo Fitness – that launched what Wahoo claimed was the world's first iPhone powered bike trainer, the 'KICKR', when launched in November last year – employs a Nordic µBlue™ nRF8001 Connectivity chip to wirelessly connect the trainer to any Bluetooth v4.0 enabled smartphone or device.
This includes the iPhone® 4S/5, 3rd/4th generation iPad®, iPad mini, and 5th generation iPod® touch running either the free Wahoo Fitness app or any one of what will be a continually growing list of compatible bike training apps including TrainerRoad, Kinomap, iMobileIntervals, and PerfPRO Studio.
The KICKR also offers full ANT+ support provided by an additional Nordic Semiconductor nRF24AP2 8-channel ANT transceiver embedded into the product for users who prefer to use their existing ANT+ devices such as bike computers and heart-rate monitors.
While in operation, the KICKR is said to be whisper-quiet and allows users to increase or decrease resistance (600-2000 Watt range), structure interval workouts, and simulate real world bike courses from their smartphone or tablet. Wahoo says resistance adjustments are instant, making it easy to replicate everything from a flat or rolling hill course, to the coast down a hill after a hard climb.
"With its wheel-off design and super flywheel, the KICKR is engineered to produce an ultra realistic road feel, equivalent to the inertia of an actual rider on the road," comments Mike Stashak, VP of Marketing at Wahoo Fitness. "And a direct power measurement at the hub provides a consistent and lab-accurate power reading for every mile covered."
The KICKR won a 'CES 2013 Best of Innovations' award at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January and is available to order direct from Wahoo Fitness or via the Apple store worldwide.
